Neonatal Intensive/NICU 1: The Bryan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a level III NICU offering the upstate region’s most advanced level of specialty care for premature and critically ill infants. Our neonatal intensive unit comprises a Small Baby Unit where only infants <30 weeks are admitted allowing us to provide developmentally appropriate and specialized care to our extremely premature population.

Neonatal Intermediate/NICU 2: A step-down unit from NICU 1. Infants are transferred here once they are stable and are on minimal respiratory support. Infants are helped to reach their goals, most commonly for growth and feeding, in preparation for discharge home.  Families are provided the opportunity to room in with their infant(s) to learn more about providing care.

Neonatal Intensive/NICU: This level III NICU unit cares for neonates that are born at less than 32 weeks of gestation, or weighing less than 1500 grams at birth, or have complex medical or surgical conditions, regardless of gestational age and weight.

Special Care Nursery: This unit cares for stable or moderately ill newborns born at or beyond 32 weeks gestation and weighing 1,500 grams or more with problems that are expected to resolve rapidly and who would not be anticipated to need subspecialty-level services on an urgent basis.  Neonates are admitted to the Special Care Nursery (SCN) for up to 6 hours of observation with continuous pulse oximetry and/or cardiac monitoring.

Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU) and Pediatric Intermediate Intensive Care (PIICU): A 14-bed combined unit caring for critically ill patients ranging from neonates to teen requiring ventilator support, cardiac drips, sedation drips, external ventricular drainage systems, central lines, trachs, g-tubes, and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).
